The holding company Valores Industriales (known in Mexico as VISA), is one of the largest businesses in Mexico. Through their subsidiary, FEMSA (Superior, XX Lager, Tecate, Tecate Light, Indio, Heineken, Sol, Bohemia, and Carta Blanca), it’s the country's largest producer of Soft Drinks (Coke, Diet Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Sin Rival, and Extra Poma). Mexico's per-capita consumption of Coke was higher than that of any other country, even the US. It's Coca-Cola business held the franchise in the Mexico City Metro area, Southeastern Mexico and Metro Buenos Aires Argentina. As of now, in 2009, this has changed much due to companies buying companies all around the World… BEER, as with ALL Industries, is not limited to country by country BUT a Global marketplace!

Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc (a Monterrey Brewery), was founded in 1890 by Isaac Garza Garza, Francisco Sada Muguerza (his brother-in-law), Jose Muguerza, and Jose Maria Schneider. In 1893 they produced their first beer barrel and won First Prize in the Chicago and Paris World Fairs. In 1909, they acquired the Owens (Corning) Patent for mechanical fabrication of glass bottles. During 1910, Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc suffered a major set-back when its founders backed Victoriano Huerta in a power struggle that followed the overthrow of Porfirio Diaz as the President of Mexico. When the forces of Venustiano Carranza defeated Huerta in 1914 they seized the brewery with it's owners fleeing into Texas US. They returned within a couple of years and contributed to the Economic Development of the City of Monterrey and many Social Services! Hojalata y Lamina (Hylsa) was founded by Visa in 1943 to produce steel sheet for metal bottle tops during World War II when supplies from the US were cut. In 1954, Cerveceria Cuauhtemoc was the 1st in Mexico to introduced metal cans. By 1970 VISA had 90 Company Divisions, 114 factories and 33,508 employees. Tragedy in 1973, Eugenio Garza Sada was killed / assassinated in a botched kidnapping by left-wing guerrillas. With the purchase of a chain of Hyatt Hotels (sold in 1988), they then added construction, real estate, tourism… animal feed, and plastics with it’s anchor beer and packaging business and the soft drink / mineral water operation it began in 1979.
During 1992-93 Visa also opened 267 convenience stores in Mexico under the Oxxo name.
